The Artist
Aloha!
My approach to painting developed through my love of music. I was singing on stage long before I picked up a paintbrush. Through music, I started visualizing images saturated in bold, brilliant color. In the early 1980’s I arrived in Hawai’i and put myself through the Bachelors of Fine Arts program at BYU-Hawai’i Campus in Laie. North Shore Oahu provided the perfect vantage point to fill my head with the stunning imagery of the Hawaiian Islands. I began honing my artistic skills as a student at the university while consecutively earning academic, performing arts and fine arts scholarships. I majored in painting, minored in music and earned a Secondary Education Credential graduating Cum Laude in 1987. My artistic focus became watercolor, acrylic, intaglio-printmaking, and bronze sculpting as my style began to evolve. I completed my Masters in Education (M. Ed.) from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2012.
During my 35-year teaching career, I designed and created five consecutive sold-out art exhibits in Hawai’i and California.
SRVEA President Ann Katzburg awarded me both the SRVEA and CTA Human Rights Award. Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan presented me with the prestigious California State Distinguished Resolution, honoring my ongoing commitment to my students for 35 years of teaching excellence. I continue to work as an LGBTQ+ activist. “Giving back” is my primary focus.
